We work with Durban-based fine artist Melanie Wilson to create artwork shaped by the space and the people who use it. From an intimate piece for a home to a distinctive feature for a larger interior, each commission begins with a conversation about what you want the work to express.
The process
From conversation to installation
Conversation
Every commission begins with a conversation about the space, the people who use it and what you want the work to express.
Brief
We consider the artwork as part of the interior: its scale, placement, colour and relationship to the surrounding materials. Together with Melanie, we develop a brief that leaves room for her artistic interpretation while remaining grounded in your space.
Direction
Melanie develops the initial direction for the work – composition, palette and materials – which we review with you before the piece is made.
Creation
Melanie creates the work – on canvas, in layered materials or directly on the wall – with close attention to texture, pattern and the stories objects can hold.
Placement & installation
We coordinate delivery, placement and installation, so the finished work sits naturally within the interior designed around it.
Why commission original art
Made for the space
Scale, placement and colour are resolved as part of the interior from the outset.
- Scale and proportion
- Placement and sightlines
- Colour and material
An artist’s point of view
The brief leaves room for Melanie’s interpretation, so the work has a presence of its own.
- Painting
- Layered materials
- Work made directly on walls
Integral to the interior
Art is treated as an integral design element, not a finishing afterthought.
- Intimate pieces for the home
- Feature works for larger interiors
- Placed within a complete scheme
